Were we ever. We fled a local conflict and resettled in Singapore, and were in the first few resettled into the Changi POW camp.

[He only tells this particular part of the story to soldiers, who wince and have comparable stories rather than gasp and go wide eyed and soft.]

It had the lowest mortality rate of any Japanese camp in the whole bloody war, and we were there right up until the British regained control.

[Not a piece of cake, but he's bloody lucky and he knows it, tells the story with a grin.]
